Bell Tower Desk Organizer

A bell tower desk organizer was designed and planned for manufacture as a Purdue themed product that combines a hammer stand, digital clock housing, pencil drawer storage, and a mounted nameplate featuring a CNC machined fountain. The project provided hands-on practice with design for manufacturing and assembly planning, including systematic concept selection, material constrained design, and process planning for laser cutting, sawing, bending, and fastening.

Project Timeline

Sep 2025 - Dec-2025

HighlightS

  • Integrated four subsystems into one compact organizer: hammer suspension, digital clock housing, pencil drawer storage, and a screw mounted nameplate with a CNC fountain element.
  • Selected materials to match function and manufacturability: thick wood for stiffness and stability, thinner wood to reduce weight, sheet metal for the pyramid top and drawer, and acrylic for transparent hammer hooks.
  • Planned a complete build workflow with CAD subassemblies, documented operations, and DFA driven improvements that increased assembly efficiency (DFA score improved from 70 percent to 82 percent).

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Design and plan the manufacture and assembly of a compact bell tower themed desk organizer that expresses Purdue University pride while integrating four core functions: a hammer stand, a digital clock housing, an organizer for writing instruments (including a drawer), and a mounted personalized nameplate that incorporates the CNC machined fountain. The final product must be stable on a desk, robust enough to support the hammer and repeated drawer use, and manufacturable within the course material and process constraints using a documented CAD, BOM, and assembly plan.
