OVERVIEW

For my Engineering Design class at Northern Virginia Community College, my group and I designed a prototype design called the "FlameTarp." This design was brought up due to the disastrous fires occurring in California at the time, and we thought to create a device that deploys a large, fireproof tarp over a tent or small-scaled building in times of emergency. The FlameTarp is essentially a cannon that stores the tarp; it is deployed through the press of a button and shoots out two ends of the tarps (with stakes at the end for grounding) that covers the building. The angle of the cannon is calculated by an included Octave program that just requires the user to input the dimensions of the house (length, width, height).

HighlightS

  • Showcasing at the Fab Lab Design Showcase Event
  • Built a small-scaled real life model
  • Improving CAD and fabrication skills
  • Includes an Octave program that calculates the required angle of the cannon for successful deployment

Civil Engineering Student

I am a dedicated and driven student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) currently pursuing an Associate's Degree in Engineering. I plan to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering at Virginia Tech. As the President of the STEAM Club at NOVA, I work on various hands-on engineering projects and help foster a community for other students to learn applicable engineering skills.
