Project Timeline

Mar 2022 - May-2022

OVERVIEW

Assembled a reactor for and successfully converted plastics into fuel oil (such as diesel, gasoline) through anaerobic thermal decomposition Collaborated with a small team on material selection, sourcing and assembly of lab-scale plastic pyrolysis reactor Performed three, 8-hour experiments - thermal pyrolysis, plain zeolite catalyst, and nickel-tungsten doped zeolite Analyzed product results from mass spectrometer, finding strong similarities to crude oil, diesel fuel, and gasoline Co-authored research paper and converted to a PowerPoint, presenting our conclusions to industry representatives

HighlightS

Project summary presentation here: Pyrolysis_presentation_2.0.pptx

Determined products of plastic pyrolysis from 3 different modes of reaction - thermal pyrolysis, zeolite catalytic pyrolysis, and Ni-W doped zeolite catalytic pyrolysis

Products yielded were very similar to crude oil, diesel, and gasoline respectively
