OVERVIEW

Leading the design and manufacture of a carbon-fiber driver seat for the McMaster Formula Electric racecar, with a focus on ergonomics, structural performance, weight reduction, and integration within tight cockpit constraints.

HighlightS

  • Designed a carbon-fiber driver seat optimized for driver ergonomics, visibility, and reach while minimizing mass and maintaining structural integrity.
  • Translated driver feedback and EV6 bead seat limitations into clear design requirements for a composite seat solution.
  • Performed advanced SolidWorks surface and mesh modeling to define seat geometry that conforms to driver anatomy and cockpit packaging constraints.
  • Designed a seat mold and manufacturing workflow, accounting for draft, part release, fiber orientation, and layup sequence.
  • Planned and executed carbon-fiber layups, considering ply orientation, stiffness requirements, and weight targets.
  • Integrated seat design with chassis mounting points, harness routing, and cockpit interfaces.
  • Iterated seat geometry through fit checks and digital driver packaging studies to refine comfort and positioning.
  • Balanced ergonomic performance, manufacturability, and competition constraints under strict timelines.
