OVERVIEW

Designed and created a small wind turbine that displays the energy it produces and its RPM for a school project. It had to be built for free from scrap found in Northeastern's engineering center.

Additional Details

Used scrap to create a meter tall wind turbine with a fan diameter of 2 feet. Used a Raspberry PI Pico connected to a DC motor, IR sensor and a LCD. The LCD displayed the voltage generated from the DC motor and the RPM measured using the IR sensor. Generated ~3 volts when using 1 foot diameter box fan at max speed. Outside, depending on wind, generated up to 5 volts.

Code is attached.

Wiring:

MOTOR:

Motor (+) → 10kΩ resistor → Pin 31 (GP26) → 10kΩ resistor → GND. #Voltage divider to protect Pico

Motor (-) → GND

IR SENSOR:

VCC → 3.3V (Pin 36)

GND → GND

OUT → Pin 20 (GP15)

LCD:

VCC → Pin 40 (5V)

GND → GND

SDA → Pin 1 (GP0)

SCL → Pin 2 (GP1)
