Project Timeline

Jan 2025 - Current

OVERVIEW

Role: R&D Mechanical Engineer Collaborating with a team of R&D engineers and cross-functional groups to design a coffee machine that does not exist yet on the market. Researching and developing brewing methods and creating innovative ways to improve quality outputs with a robust mechanical system. Developing, designing, and validating a complex high-pressure robotic mechanical system. Working with SMEs who specialize in everything from specific mechanical components to coffee Q graders. Managing and mentoring multiple co-ops, interns, and technicians to support the development of brewing techniques, mechanical functionality, and component selection and validation. Overseeing the design process from the prototype phase through engineering builds and toward mass production.

HighlightS

  • Designing a system to produce proper quality coffee to SCA standards
  • Creating a robust, quality machine that is capable of creating outputs that no other machine can
  • Utilize Python scripts to validate individual components before validating them within the machine
  • Collaborate with the cross-functional team to ensure a robust system is being designed

Additional Details

Role: R&D Mechanical Engineer

  • Aided in the development of a spring-based mechanical housing for an extremely sensitive component, which communicates critical information to the PCBA for the functionality of the machine
    • Worked with cross-functional teams to create a robust and optimized design
    • Utilized Python to test and validate that the mechanical assembly did not add any noise to the communication between the PCBA and the component
      • The test fixture went through many iterations. First, just testing to ensure the component functions on its own, and then slowly adding more components until we were able to replicate the in-unit use case. This isolated the component from the main software, providing confidence that the component was capable of functioning correctly. This allowed for easier root-cause analysis, as we knew the mechanical assembly was sound and could validate this on any unit if issues were to arise.
  • Leading the development of brew methods and recipes to create quality outputs across all coffee types
    • Optimizing pump and boiler control to create a fast, high-quality experience
      • Required lots of data collection and analysis to ensure the method selected was robust and efficient
    • Testing and validating all brew types and handing off to cross-functional teams to complete full validation checkouts
  • Collaborated with international teams
  • Worked with JIRA to properly capture and track all issues found during development
  • Presented to key stakeholders and leadership to provide insight into the project's progress
