Project Timeline

Sep 2024 - Current

OVERVIEW

Designed, built, and launched a high-powered rocket as part of the BYU Rocketry Club, contributing to the full design-to-flight lifecycle. Used OpenRocket to model the vehicle’s aerodynamics, stability, and flight profile, then assisted with fabrication, assembly, and launch operations. Gained hands-on experience with structural design, recovery system integration, and pre-flight testing.

HighlightS

Successfully designed, built, and launched a high-powered rocket that reached a flight apogee of 1,900 ft

Created detailed aerodynamic, stability, and flight-performance models in OpenRocket to guide design decisions

Contributed to structural design, component integration, and recovery system development

Assisted in fabrication and assembly using composites, machining, and rapid-prototyping methods

Performed pre-flight testing, safety checks, and launch-day operations with a 100% successful flight

Gained practical experience in rocketry principles, systems engineering, and hands-on build skills

Additional Details

Launch Day

Successfully launched rocket at Frank Hunt Field, Utah reaching an apogee of 1920 ft.

Rocket Design

Rocket design made on Open Rocket prioritizing weight, apogee, stability, center of gravity, and length. The rocket simulations calculated an anticipated apogee of 1936 ft. I decided to make an elliptical fin design to improve stability.

Rocket Construction

After completing the design in OpenRocket, I sourced all components, laser-cut the 1/8″ plywood fins, and fully assembled the rocket using an epoxy mix. I also installed all internal components including the parachute, shock cord, motor, and altimeter according to the OpenRocket design specifications.
